Sellers who host their stores on BigCommerce will pay an extra 34% a month beginning June 1, 2023 (new customers will pay the higher fees immediately). That means its fee structure will remain the same as its rival Shopify, which announced an identical 34% fee increase[1] last month. Even the layouts of the pricing pages of the two companies are remarkably similar.
Both BigCommerce and Shopify offer three tiers for non-enterprise retailers:
– BigCommerce Standard and Shopify Basic plans are rising from $29/month to $39/month this year.
– BigCommerce Plus and Shopify Regular plans are going from $79/month to $105/month this year.
– BigCommerce Pro and Shopify Advanced plans are going from $299/month to $399/ month this year.
And just like Shopify, BigCommerce is telling merchants they can get the current monthly rate if they switch to an annual plan that locks them in for 12 months. But in a comment on a BigCommerce Facebook post[2], a seller wrote, “BigCommerce Annual billing does not suit a small business’ cash flow so I’m bracing myself for a migration.”
Further aggravating sellers is the fact BigCommerce requires them to call customer service in order to switch to an annual plan, sellers pointed out, including in a tweet[3].
In its announcement, BigCommerce told sellers[4] the prices for its Standard and Plus plans had not changed in nine years, and its Pro plan pricing changed two years ago. “We have remained committed to providing new functionality to help you grow and expand. In the last two years alone, we have delivered enterprise functionality at small businesses prices,” it said.
