Google go Remove the lock icon from the Chrome browser that appears in the address bar when connecting to the opened website via HTTPS protocol. It’s replaced with the Settings icon, which the developer says serves its purpose more closely.

The padlock icon means that the website is protected by the HTTPS protocol, which prevents the interception of traffic in the clear. However, an attacker launching a phishing site containing malware can easily install an SSL certificate on it, which provides an HTTPS connection and a padlock icon will appear in the browser’s address bar. For an inexperienced user, this can be misleading and force them to believe that the website is safe.

The resulting misunderstanding is by no means harmless, Google admits, since almost all phishing sites use the HTTPS protocol, and this icon is displayed when opened. It got to the point that law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, began issuing statements: a badge with a lock is not a guarantee of security. And even Google’s own research showed that only 11% of users correctly interpreted this symbol.

It was originally launched a few years ago to encourage the developer community to move to HTTPS – today, 95% of resources support this protocol, which means it’s time to break the “relic from the days when HTTPS was rare” to get rid of. It’s replaced by an icon symbolizing “Settings”: users, Google says, have generally never noticed that clicking in this area opens additional controls, such as B. blocking notifications from the site, as well as disabling access to the resource for the webcam or microphone.
The final look of the new icon is still being worked out, and it will debut in September with the release of the 117th version of the browser in the public version of Chrome – the changes will affect the desktop version and the Android version. And on iOS, this icon is inactive, so it won’t become at all.
